Australian standard hours
Under the Fair Work Act 2009, the maximum ordinary hours for a full-time employee are 38 hours per week. This is the standard used by most modern awards and enterprise agreements across Australia. Some awards (e.g. Clerks Private Sector Award) specify 35 hours as full-time.
How daily hours work
At 38 hours over a 5-day week, a standard work day is 7.6 hours (7 hours and 36 minutes). This is why you'll sometimes see payslips showing 7.6 hours rather than a round 8.
The formulas
Hourly → Annual:
hourly × hours/wk × weeks/yr
= annual salary
Annual → Hourly:
annual ÷ (hours/wk × weeks/yr)
= hourly rate
Derived periods:
daily = hourly × (hrs/wk ÷ 5)
weekly = hourly × hrs/wk
fortnightly = weekly × 2
monthly = annual ÷ 12
Casual loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate in lieu of paid leave entitlements (annual leave, personal leave, notice of termination). This means a casual rate of $30/hr equates to a permanent equivalent of $24/hr — the extra $6/hr compensates for the lack of leave.
Casual → Permanent equivalent:
$30/hr ÷ 1.25 = $24/hr base
Permanent → Casual equivalent:
$24/hr × 1.25 = $30/hr casual
National minimum wage
As of 1 July 2024, the Australian national minimum wage is $24.10 per hour (or $915.90 per 38-hour week). At 38 hours × 52 weeks, that's $47,626.80 per year before tax. The minimum wage is reviewed annually by the Fair Work Commission, with the next review effective 1 July 2025.
Refer to the Fair Work Ombudsman ↗ for the latest rates and award-specific minimums.
To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by the number of weeks you work per year. In Australia, the standard full-time working week is 38 hours under the Fair Work Act. For example, $35 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $69,160 per year. If you work fewer than 52 weeks (e.g. taking unpaid leave), reduce the weeks accordingly. This calculator handles all the maths instantly and shows you every pay period at a glance.
The Fair Work Act 2009 sets maximum ordinary hours at 38 per week for full-time employees, though an employer and employee can agree to average these over a period of up to 26 weeks. Part-time employees work fewer than 38 hours per week on a regular, agreed pattern. Casual employees have no guaranteed hours but receive a 25% casual loading to compensate for the absence of leave entitlements. Some modern awards specify different standard hours — for example, 35 hours per week for the Clerks Private Sector Award. Always check your applicable award or enterprise agreement for exact ordinary hours.
