What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are a healthy weight. It is used worldwide by health professionals as a quick screening tool for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
BMI limitations
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes or muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite low body fat. BMI also does not account for bone density, age, gender, or ethnic background — all of which can affect what constitutes a healthy weight. It is best used alongside other assessments such as waist circumference and body composition.
For children & teens

For example, a person who is 175 cm tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, which falls in the normal weight range. BMI is a useful starting point but has well-known limitations. It cannot distinguish between muscle and fat — a bodybuilder and an overweight person could have the same BMI.
