How The Tool Shed writes guides, where our numbers come from, and why we never give personal financial advice.
Official sources only
Every rate, threshold, and bracket we cite comes directly from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Services Australia, or relevant state revenue offices. We link to the exact source page so you can verify any figure yourself.
General information, not advice
We explain how the tax system works in plain English. We never tell you what to do with your money. We are not registered tax agents, financial advisers, or solicitors. Our content is educational only — it is not a substitute for professional advice tailored to your circumstances.
Updated each financial year
Tax rates change on 1 July each year. We update all calculators and guides to reflect the new rates as soon as they are legislated and published by the ATO. Guides that reference older rates display a clear staleness warning.
Prohibited language policy
To protect readers and comply with Australian financial services law (ASIC RG 234), we never use directive phrases like "you should", "we recommend", "guaranteed", or "risk-free" in our content. We present facts and let you draw your own conclusions.
No commercial bias
We do not receive commissions for mentioning specific financial products. Where ads appear on our site (via Google AdSense), they are clearly separated from editorial content and we have no control over which ads are shown.
Every calculator on The Tool Shed has an automated test suite that verifies results against the ATO's published tax tables. As of the current build, 61 unit tests cover income tax, Medicare levy, HECS/HELP repayments, LITO, SAPTO, MLS, and superannuation across all supported tax years (2023-24 through 2026-27).
When we update rates for a new financial year, all tests must pass against the new ATO figures before the update goes live. If you find an error, please report it — calculation accuracy is our top priority.
Always consult a registered tax agent or licensed financial adviser before making decisions about your finances.
